Ask once, with a number
Name one specific figure, a little above what you would happily accept, and give one or two reasons tied to the job. A range invites them to pick the bottom of it.
Stay enthusiastic
Make it clear you want the job. Negotiation goes best when the employer is confident you will say yes if they can meet you.
Know what else you can ask for
If the salary is fixed, a signing bonus, an earlier pay review, extra leave or remote days are often easier for a hiring manager to approve.
Questions
Can negotiating cost me the offer?
A polite, specific request almost never does. Employers expect it, especially for salaried roles. Keep the tone warm and avoid ultimatums.
Should I negotiate by email or phone?
Email gives you time to choose your words and leaves a record. Many people send the email and then use the phone script when the recruiter calls back.
